Some Coleman portable gas appliances can be connected to bulk propane tanks instead of smaller Coleman disposable tanks. However, the right adapter must be used, and not all Coleman appliances are designed to withstand the higher pressure of the bulk fuel tanks. Only the presently available or recently superseded official Coleman bulk tank adapter and Coleman hose should be used. Alternately, Coleman offers a hose to which a bulk tank adapter has been attached on one end, with a Coleman fitting on the other.

Adapter and Separate Hose

Fasten the bulk tank adapter to the bulk tank. This is done by inserting the thinner end of the adapter into the threaded sleeve of the bulk tank nozzle by hand. Then tighten the connection by using a wrench around the flat surface of the adapter as necessary until you have achieved a tight fit. If using the older model of adapter, use the attached wheel to tighten the connection to the bulk tank by hand.

Fasten the sleeve end of the hose to the bulk tank adapter. Tighten by hand or use a wrench as necessary.

Insert the threaded end of the hose into the regulator of the appliance. Tighten the connection as per appliance instructions, either by hand or with a wrench.

Open the bulk tank valve. Adjust the regulator in order to have sufficient gas flow to ignite the appliance flame as instructed for each appliance.

Using the Adapter Hose

Fasten the exposed threaded end of the hose to the bulk tank. Tighten it securely using the wheel attached to this adapter end.

Insert the other end of the hose into the appliance regulator. Tighten the connection as per appliance instructions, either by hand or with a wrench.

Open the bulk tank valve. Adjust the regulator in order to have sufficient gas flow to ignite the appliance flame as instructed for each appliance.

Items you will need

  • Coleman bulk tank adapter model number 2000005188 or previous bulk tank adapter model 5410B790T Coleman 8 ft pressure hose 2000005042
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Alternately: Coleman 5 ft high-pressure propane hose and adapter model number 2000005062

Tips

  • The adapter and hose are recommended when longer distances are needed between tank and appliance, as the separate hose is 8 feet long as opposed to the 5-foot long adapter hose.
  • The older model of adapter is considered safe and effective. It has just been redesigned for convenience and compactness.

Warning

  • You should not connect any Coleman appliance to a bulk tank if it is marked with a warning not to do so. Such appliances are not made to withstand the pressure of fuel being dispensed from a bulk tank.
