Evinrude outboard motors have served the boating industry for more than 100 years. The Evinrude 9.9-horsepower outboard motor was first manufactured in 1974 and remains in production as of 2011. The method for identifying an Evinrude falls into one of two categories according to year of manufacture, pre-1980 and 1980 to present. If you don't have the owner's manual for your Evinrude 9.9 outboard, start by locating the engine's model number.
Remove the outboard motor from the water. Locate the nameplate on the outboard motor or the mounting bracket. Look for the Evinrude brand name as the starting point.
Review the model number on the mounting bracket. Evinrude 9.9 outboards manufactured between 1974 and 1979 have a five-digit model number. The first two numbers are 1 and 0. The third number corresponds with the manufacture year. The final two numbers are 24, 25, 54, 55 or 35.
An eight- to ten-character model number indicates that the Evinrude 9.9 outboard was manufactured in 1980 or later. Each character represents a different characteristic of the Evinrude 9.9 outboard, as follows.
Decode the first portion of the model number. The first character indicates the model variation, and whether the engine was meant for other countries' markets. A represents Australia, B represents Belgium, C represents Canada, H represents Hong Kong, S represents South America, T represents Tracker Model and V represents Boat Builder.
Decipher the second character. The second character represents the brand of the outboard (E for Evinrude).
Review the third and fourth character. The two characters are numeric and represent the horsepower (for example, "10" is often seen for a 9.9 motor).
Identify the design features of the Evinrude 9.9 outboard. The design features represent the fifth and/or sixth character. For example, an Evinrude 9.9 outboard with a power trim and tilt has a P in the model number. An earlier model with a manual tilt, electric start has MS in the model number.
Determine the length of the shaft of the Evinrude 9.9 outboard. If the design feature in Step 6 is one character, the model number for the shaft length starts with the sixth character. if the design feature is two characters, the shaft length starts with the seventh character. L indicates a 20-inch shaft, Y indicates a 22.5-inch shaft, X indicates a 25-inch shaft and Z indicates a 30-inch shaft. A lack of a code number indicates the shaft length is 15 inches.
Decipher the next two characters of the Evinrude 9.9 outboard model number. Two letters represent the manufacture year. Each letter represents a number. The letter I represents one, N represents two, T represents three, R represents four, O represents five, D represents six, U represents seven, C represents eight, E represents nine and S represents zero. For example, an Evinrude 9.9 outboard manufactured in 1998 will have EC in the model number.
Locate the final character, which represents the suffix or model run of the Evinrude 9.9 outboard.
