Brahman cattle, members of the zebu family of cattle, are animals that can withstand hot and humid conditions. Decedents of cattle that originated in India, the Brahman cattle are distinguished in part by the large hump around the shoulder and neck area.
Hump Material and Purpose
The hump is a mixture of muscle, connective tissue and some fat deposits. While the cattle's hump might be reminiscent of a camel's hump, it is not thought to store water or fat specifically for use during times of need. In fact, the exact purpose is as of yet unknown.
