Fiberglass is painted with a gel coat, which consists of fiberglass resin that's pigmented with color. Gel coat also has additives for protection from ultraviolet rays and to keep the paint from sagging when it's applied. For fiberglass applications that are constantly exposed to the sun, the finish will become chalky and faded due to oxidation. In order to restore the shine to the fiberglass, the oxidation must be removed and the surface waxed and buffed out.

Mild detergent
Bucket
Sponge
Towel
Rags
Acetone
Rubbing compound
Gel coat wax
Electric buffer
Step 1
Add mild detergent to bucket of water and wash the surface of the fiberglass, removing any dirt or other buildup. Dry the surface with a towel.
Step 2
Remove any wax that remains on the surface using a rag and acetone. Let the surface dry.
Step 3
Remove all the chalky areas of fiberglass using rubbing compound. Rub the affected areas in hard, circular motions until the surface is completely smooth. Rinse the surface with clean water and dry the fiberglass with a towel.
Step 4
Apply two coats of boat wax to the fiberglass in circular motions and let it dry. Buff the surface with an electric buffer until the original shine returns.
