How to Get a Firearm Owner ID Card

The firearm owner ID card is required for anyone who wants to possess or buy firearms. The card ensures that residents who qualify to posses firearms are identified for the safety of those in the community. Filling for a firearms owner identity card is completed through the state police department under strict background checks. In most states, anyone over the age of 18 is eligible to apply as long as they have no criminal record. In other states, consent is required for anyone under 21. Most states do not require you to have a firearm owner ID. The few states that require a form of firearm ID include: Hawaii, Illinois, Connecticut, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, and New York.

Ask for consent from your parent or legal guardian, if your state requires you to do so. Some states, such as Illinois, people under the age of 21 require consent. The consent must be written, signed and submitted together with the application form. The parent or legal guardian giving the consent must also qualify to posses a firearm ID card.

Complete any required safety courses. Some jurisdictions, such as Massachusetts, require a safety course, while Illinois does not require one. Ask your state police department about the course.

Download and complete the online fire arm owner ID application form from your state police department website. You can also get these forms from firearm retail stores and manually complete them. Provide your background information, such as your name, physical description, gender, identification as a citizen and addresses. Sign your application.

Attach a copy of your photograph and the the required processing fee, which is non-refundable. Send this form to your state police department.

Wait to receive your firearm owner ID card from the state police department. It takes 30 days after receipt of the application to either approve or deny the application. The identification card is valid for a period of 10 years from the date of issuance.
