How to Tie a Nylon Rope

Explore America's Campgrounds

Nylon is a popular material for use in making ropes, as it is lightweight but strong. When using nylon rope, there are a variety of knots you can use, each serving its own purposes. Learning to tie three knots will prepare you for most scenarios: a figure eight, a slip-knot and a half-hitch A figure eight is an easy basic knot. A slip knot can be used to secure the rope around something with a non-permanent attachment that can be loosened and tightened as desired and a half-hitch can be used to securely anchor the rope against a stationary object.

Figure Eight Knot

Create a loop in the rope, by passing one loose end over the other where you want the knot to be.

Take the end of rope which is on top at the point where the rope crosses over itself and wrap it behind the point where the rope crosses over itself.

Pass the loose end back in front of the loop, then through the loop.

Pull both ends of rope to tighten the knot.

Slip-Knot

Create a loop in the rope, by passing one loose end over the other where you want the knot to be.

Reach through the loop and grab one of the loose ends.

Pull the end back through the loop, creating a second loop.

Hold the two loose ends and push up on the first loop so that it tightens.

Drape the second loop over what you want to secure snugly, then slide the knot from the first loop to tighten or loosen.

Half-Hitch

Wrap the rope around the object to which you are tying the half-hitch, at the point you want the hitch to be.

Pass the short end of rope under the long end of rope.

Wrap the short end over the long end and through the loop created by crossing the two over.

Press the loop into the object to tighten the half-hitch.
