West Covina is just 18 miles from Los Angeles and home to more than 106,000 residents. If you're looking for some things to do on a budget, you'll find a broad range of fun, free places in and around West Covina to take your kids, including museums, parks and nature areas.
You can take your kids to visit the Glendora Historical Society Museum, 15 minutes away. Inside, your family can take a tour to see collections of historical items from the 1800s through the early 1900s, such as antique furniture, photographs and clothing. At the Duarte Historical Museum, 11 minutes away, your children can take a free tour of the museum to see artifacts that tell the story of Duarte's past. Additionally, you and your kids can head over to the Baldwin Park Historical Society Museum, just 3 minutes away. When you tour the museum, you'll get a look at clothing that was worn in the area throughout the years, a collection of antique shoes, old military uniforms and antique household items.
It's free to check out some of the parks and nature areas near West Covina. Galster Wilderness Park is right in West Covina and features nature trails and monthly programs about fossils, animal adaptations and mineral identification. You'll also find some fun playgrounds throughout the city, including those at Cameron Park, Gingrich Park and Shadow Oak Park. The city of West Covina Recreation Department offers an assortment of free kids' activities and events throughout the year. During the summer, kids can go to Orangewood Park to enjoy a free lunch and activities. There's also free Summer Movies in the Park throughout the summer months, at the Civic Center Courtyard and free drive-in movies at the West Covina Municipal Pool. In October, you can take your kids to the free All Hallows Eve at "Ghoster" Park event, inside Galster Park Nature Center. Kids get to dress up, trick-or-treat and take a spooky hike.
At the West Covina Library branch of the County of Los Angeles Public Library, your kids can enjoy some free and exciting programs throughout the year. At storytime, kids can listen to stories, sing songs, do fingerplays and enjoy playtime and activities with other kids. Enjoy a juggling or magic show at the library, too. During the summer, your kids can also sign up for the summer reading program, to read books, tell about them and earn prizes.
