How to Disassemble a Penn Reel

If you plan on catching fish, than keeping your fishing reels in top working order is of the utmost importance. Regularly scheduled maintenance is the easiest way to ensure that they will remain working correctly. The most important part of keeping your reels functioning properly is to ensure that they are clean and in order to clean them, you must disassemble them.

Remove the reel handle by gripping the reel and turning the handle counterclockwise. This will free the handle from the reel.

Unseat the reel spool by unscrewing the drag control and lifting the spool from the reel.

Use the screwdriver to remove the screws from the reel cover plate and lift the plate from the reel.

Use the screwdriver to remove the screws from the gear set inside the reel.

Use the adjustable wrench to remove the nut that was formerly covered by the spool and slide the gear post out of the top of the reel.

Remove the reel bail by unscrewing all of the screws and gently dislodging the bail from the reel.

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Small adjustable wrench
