How to Survive by Eating Desert Animals

by Sports & Fitness Editor

If you want to be like the military and survival specialists in the world, you need to know how to eat animals in the desert. It's a necessary skill to have if you find yourself stranded or lost in the desert without any food. All desert animals are edible. Here's how to survive by eating them.

Use a small light to attract desert insects at night. Lift stones to find desert insects. Be careful to avoid scorpions and centipedes. Brush ant larvae off the bottom of stones into a container of water. They will float to the top.

Remove wings and legs of grasshoppers and crickets. Cook grasshoppers before eating them in the desert. They are best when cooked alive. Stir-fry, roast or boil locusts. These desert insects are very rich in protein. You can also grind the roasted locusts to a fine powder to eat.

Lay traps for larger animals and birds. Watch for hawks, vultures and wolves to gather around fresh meat. Chase them off to get the meat for yourself.

Set fire to sagebrush. After the fire dies down, look for rabbits or rats. Build a fire at the entrance of rabbit holes to smoke them out. Club them as they come out of the hole--be ready.

Find snakes sunbathing on rocks, but be careful to avoid getting bitten. They can be poisonous. Throw rocks at lizards to kill them. They can usually be found under flat stones in the morning.

Raid birds' nests for eggs. Fry them on hot rocks, by burning timber on top of a group of rocks, then brushing the ash away and using the heat from the rocks to cook with. Or you can build a "bridge" with rocks so that you can keep a fire burning underneath to keep the rocks heated.

Cook the animals appropriately. Bake in ashes an animal that you will skin before eating. Use kebabs to cook meat that you've cubed. Roast them over hot coals. Make a boiling pot by digging a hole in hard ground, lining it with leaves, and filling it with water. Drop fire-hot coals from your fire into the water to get it boiling. Cook your insects and meat in the water.
