How to Spool a Closed Face Fishing Reel

How to Spool a Closed Face Fishing Reel

Explore America's Campgrounds

Of all the fishing reels available to anglers, closed face reels, which also are known as spincast reels, are the easiest to learn to operate and use. That is why it is especially common to see novice fishermen using them. Casting the reels involves pressing a button, and the line on the reel does not backlash or tangle, as may happen with other reels. Many closed face reels come loaded with fishing line, but anglers should spool new line on them at least once during each fishing season.

Hold the cover of the closed face reel and spin it counterclockwise. Turn it until you can pull the cover off. Set it aside.

Attach the closed face reel to a fishing rod. While many rods will work, the best have a trigger that hangs below the rod handle.

Insert the fishing line into the rod tip and pull it through, and then through each of the guides on the fishing rod.

Put the line through the small circle at the front of the reel cover.

Secure the line to the spool of the reel by winding it around the spool twice. Tie a knot to hold the line on the spool.

Add line to the spool by cranking the reel handle clockwise. Stop adding line when the line is 1/8 of an inch below the rim of the spool.

Put the reel cover back on the reel.

Cut the fishing line beyond the rod tip.
