How to Identify the Year of an Evinrude Motor

by Jay Angel

Evinrude has been making outboard motors since 1907. Before you purchase a motor, you should determine its age. The origin date of an Evinrude is encoded into its model number and easy to determine with a model number code information table for motors that were made after 1980. For pre-1980 models, the model number codes were not as organized and you must refer to a website to determine the motor's age.

For Motors Manufactured After 1980

Most Evinrude nameplates are on the motor or its mounting bracket. This plate will contain the serial number and a model number code. Write down the code.

Go to the website at http://www.marineengine.com/manuals/evinrude/models_1980-present.gif.

Use the Model Number Code Information Table to decode the model number and learn the year your Evinrude motor was manufactured.

Pre-1980 Motors

Go to the website at http://www.marineengine.com/manuals/evinrude/#e70hp.

Click on your motor's horsepower rating. Scroll through a list of model numbers and their corresponding years.

Find your model number on your motor and match it with the model number on the Web page. The year of manufacture will be adjacent to the model number.
